Sparrows Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
We are a 4 piece band from Dallas, Texas. Bryan on drums, Ryan on guitar, Mike on bass, and Jason on vocals.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
We have an ever evolving sound that is based on a mixture of death and black metal. We are inspired by bands like Watain and Behemoth, and also bands like Enslaved that bring a bit more of a progressive feel.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
We write about Satan as well as the disease that is religion. Sometimes we write about movies or games that inspire us, as well.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
The sparrow is one of the most docile birds out there. To make it synonomous with evil would be a challenge. We have accepted this challenge.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Our last two CD release shows were great. Every show we play has gotten bigger. We were joined by our brothers in Sincerely the Reaper and Verdict of Vengeance for our last CD release. Finding bands to team up with is difficult, as I have found almost every musician has an ego more bloated than the next guy.

6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?
Not as of right now. Some rumors have been circulating about a small Texas run, but that hasn't been fully explored
.
7. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label and if so what kind of label do you feel that would be a perfect fit for your music?
It would be important for them to understand what we are doing with the band and what our main purpose actually is. We have a long term plan for the band, and every thing has been going exactly as planned. We aren't interested in changing that for any label.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?
Not sure why, but besides our hometown following, we continue to get support from people in Indonesia. Strange.

9. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
It's a fulltime line up. I have a 2 studio side projects where I play drums, bass and guitar, and Jason does vocals. One is Satanic Black Metal (http://www.facebook.com/InversionOfTheHolyHour) and one is black metal based on the game Skyrim (http://www.facebook.com/AlduinMetal)

10. What musical direction will the music be on the next 2 releases that you have planned in this 3 album series?
The musical direction isn't something we discuss in words, really. We discuss what music we enjoy, or if something is played that inspires us, we elaborate on that. Only the sessions can tell what the music will sound like.
11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Definitely Watain. Mike and I have seen them a few times and are huge fans. Behemoth is another band that we all really enjoy. Black metal is a style of music that has a "feeling" to it. When you put it on, it almost transports you to another dimension. That was really something we all mutually enjoued about the genre. We never discussed playing black metal or sounding like it. It just happened.
12. Does Satanism or Occultism play any role in your music?
It does. In the sense that we see Satan as freedom. The liberator. The one who knows no boundaries. Satan comes through our music in a variety of ways, however, I really am the only one in the band that has explored and researched Satanism. The other 3 are atheists and share my hatred for religion.
13. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Games are something that have become really big in the last few years, and I have really felt inspired musically by them. Jason and I have a few songs that are based on experiences we have had in gaming. I like to put on a game, listen to black metal, and explore a new place.
14. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thanks for the interview. You can check out our new album over at http://sparrowsmetal.bandcamp.com/album/mark-of-the-beast-indoctrination
